THE PLAYERS Championship Shines a Light on Sawgrass, Old & New

TPC Sawgrass ClubhouseEach year for a few days in May, THE PLAYERS Championship puts Ponte Vedra Beach, and Sawgrass, on the world stage. Professional golfers, and their fans, get a close up look at the storied Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, as well as the community that surrounds it.

While the spotlight shines brightest on TPC Sawgrass during THE PLAYERS Championship (May 5 – 10 this year), it’s important to note that there is another Sawgrass community entirely that lies just east of A1A. This is the original Sawgrass Country Club, which began construction in 1972.

In fact, it was the East-West Course at the Sawgrass Country Club that played host to THE PLAYERS Championship from 1977 to 1981. Since then, the tournament has been played at TPC Sawgrass. [Read more…]

Florida Golf Means Business

Jacksonville and St. Augustine GolfPunxsutawney Phil may be predicting six more weeks of winter, but here in Florida, we’re already thinking golf. With so many golf courses, golf course communities and golf-related events, it’s clear that the game of golf translates to big business in Florida.

In fact, according to this article in Fort Myers Florida Weekly, Florida has more than 21,294 golf holes, more than any other state. It’s also number one in the country when it comes to the number of tourists visiting the state specifically to play golf.

The Players Championship puts Ponte Vedra Beach on the Global Stage

17th Hole at TPC Sawgrass, Ponte Vedra Beach, FloridaFor those of us who don’t live in a big, big city (I’m talking New York, Chicago, L.A.), it’s nice to have an event or two that allow you to show your civic pride to the rest of the world. Indianapolis has the Indy 500. Louisville has the Kentucky Derby. And Ponte Vedra Beach—and Jacksonville, by proximity—has The Players Championship.

This past week, Ponte Vedra Beach again played host to some of golf’s finest players and fans. As always, the event was very well run, with residents and visitors alike enjoying the sunshine and competition. The excitement lasted well into Sunday evening with a sudden death playoff culminating on the island green of the legendary 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass.

Best of all, visitors got a glimpse of what makes living in Ponte Vedra Beach (or Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, St. Augustine, etc.) year round so special. From the beaches to the restaurants to the golf courses, northeast Florida really does have something for everyone.

Now if we could only get Tiger Woods to stick around for the entire week…oh well, there’s always next year. See you out at Sawgrass…
