Good news for Ponte Vedra and north St. Augustine residents…word is, the Pine Island fire station opened today. Located just off U.S.-1, just past Holly’s Nursery, Fire Station 15 will be available to serve communities such as Palencia, Kensington, Las Calinas, Florentine, Walden Chase and Pine Island. The station will also provide additional support for the communities of Nocatee, World Golf Village, County Road 210 and Palm Valley.
The opening of the new station this summer is due in large part to a federal SAFER grant (PDF). The grant provides funding for 12 new firefighter positions over the next two years. Without the federal funding, the station would have remained closed until an additional revenue source could have been identified.
In addition to faster response times and increased safety, residents in the area could also see their homeowner’s insurance rates decrease slightly. Homeowner’s in the area should check with their insurance agents to see if the opening of the new fire station will have an affect on their insurance rates.
